As part of the Zentai Art Exhibition: Invisible Whole 3, a series of performances by various Zentai artists were put up at Japan Creative Centre on 30th May, known as Zentai Performance Day. Opened to the public, the aim of the performance day was to develop the idea of Zentai Art among the audiences, as well as exploring Zentai art from different perspectives.
One of the highlights was by artist Wen Chao, where he attached himself to the tree and painted the character「今」, which means ‘now’ in Japanese, onto himself and his painting. The performance was to seek the present moment in his body and his paintings, as well as to materialise the present. It also expressed the struggles of adolescence and the hope to break free from all the limitations and restrictions in the adult world.
Another performance done by artist Faye Lim and her partner was a crawl dance movement in Zentai suit that symbolized human evolution. It showed how humans have revolved from being identity-less to becoming Homo sapiens.
Tan Ai Khim, another artist wore a black Zentai suit and wrapped herself in newspapers with her partner, explored the influences and effects of media toward humans on the different levels of consciousness. It questions what exactly humans read from the media and the form of pressures it creates, whether positive or negative.
The performance day lasted from 12pm to 6pm and through this event, many of the audiences were given the opportunities to come up close with Zentai art and its suits for the first time. They also had the chance to interact and exchange thoughts with some of the artists. It was indeed new and unique experience for both the audiences and Japan Creative Centre.
